Sidewalks and gabions to ensure safety of Umzumbe Road residents
Sidewalks and gabions have been installed on Umzumbe Road to promote safety of residents
AS PART of service delivery priorities, a new sidewalk stretching about 5km and gabions have been built in ward 40 under the Community Infrastructure Project. Ward 40 Councillor Sithembiso Mzimela said the sidewalks will provide more than safety for residents. “Sidewalks make many things accessible to the community, like being able to exercise and safely travel to various destinations.” He said the development of infrastructure and the provision of safe roads and bridges, while creating
job opportunities for people in the community, was his priority. “This area desperately needed safe sidewalks, especially because there is a sharp curve at the corner and the road is narrow.” He added that the building of gabions in the nearby stream was in response to floods and heavy rains that caused much damage. “We want the gabions to cover the entire stream, as many houses are in danger of being washed away.
Hopefully funds will be available to ensure that this work is completed sooner.” Elizabeth Maphalala, a resident from Umzumbe Road, said she was pleased about the work that has already been completed. “I hope that the completion of the installation of gabions will be done soon so that people can be safe.”
