Radisson Blu Durban uMhlanga Hotel boosts local economy
The opening of the Radisson Blu Durban uMhlanga Hotel was lauded for the critical economic boost it will have on the City’s tourism sector. The architectural marvel is a five-star hotel and is the first phase of the R4.3 billion Oceans uMhlanga Development. The development will create 10 700 temporary and permanent employment opportunities. “As the City, we will be able to collect R34.4 million in rates revenue annually from this development,” said eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda during the unveiling of the hotel on 3 June.
He added that the Radisson Blu Durban uMhlanga is a welcome addition to the iconic landmarks in the City. “This development is not only going to change the skyline of the City, but it is also expected to contribute positively towards economic growth for KwaZulu-Natal by providing much-needed employment.”
He said the development is a culmination of hard work and visionary leadership of businessman Vivian Reddy, who continues to respond to the clarion call for the private sector to partner with government to jointly bolster economic recovery efforts. The second phase of the Oceans uMhlanga Development will be the opening of the shopping centre earmarked for October. The shopping centre will have retail shops including international brands found in world-class cities.
Reddy said as part as of empowering people, 35 percent of the project belonged to more than 23 000 shareholders who invested. “These investors are ‘normal’ people from low to middle income earners who are now part of this award-winning five-star hotel. We are proud to present a hotel of global standard leisure and relaxation.” nonduduzo.ngcongo@durban.gov.za
