Public urged to be vigilant on roads ahead of festive season

Head of the Metro Police Commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu said teams remain on high alert as the festive season approaches. He urged motorists to be vigilant on the roads to reduce the high number of accidents and fatalities.

HEAD of the Metro Police Commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu urged residents to be extra vigilant on the roads as the highly anticipated festive season approaches. He said while officers are working to enforce by-laws and conducting roadblocks, the number of accidents continues to cause concern. “The Metro Police has partnered with multiple government institutions and Municipal departments to address the high number of accidents.

Our ongoing operations involve partnerships with the South African Police Service, the City’s Health Unit, and other internal and external stakeholders. The festive season is a highly anticipated time of year to spend with loved ones and on holiday, so we urge residents and visitors to adhere to the rules of the road and by-laws to ensure safety,” said Mchunu.

He also condemned the throwing of objects from bridges onto cars passing below. “The recent death of a 62-year-old who was killed when a car battery was thrown from the N3 bridge has caused concern.  We reassure the public that we are working to curb such acts through increased officer deployment,” Mchunu added. “We want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe festive season.”
