Mayor Xaba commends progress at Northern Wastewater Treatment Works
EThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba commended the work done to restore and upgrade the Northern Wastewater Treatment Works.
ETHEKWINI Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has commended the progress made in the upgrading and restoration of the Northern Wastewater Treatment Works which suffered extensive damage during the floods in the City. Mayor Xaba led a delegation of Executive Committee members and senior Municipal officials for a site inspection at the treatment works in Sea Cow Lake, which is currently being repaired at a cost of R500 million.
The plant forms part of the 10 wastewater treatment works the Municipality is upgrading in collaboration with Umngeni-uThukela Water. After the site inspection, Mayor Xaba convened the weekly water and sanitation meeting which takes place every Friday. The meeting aims to resolve water and sanitation challenges in eThekwini and to track progress on projects that are currently underway. The meeting was also joined by Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Isaac Seitlholo who applauded the City leadership for engaging weekly on water and sanitation issues.
Mayor Xaba said he was pleased that great strides are being made to address water challenges in the City. Commenting on the progress made to upgrade sanitation infrastructure in the City, Mayor Xaba said the progress made was evidenced by the water quality of beaches. “Currently, of the 23 swimming beaches in the City, only one is closed. This demonstrates the hard work we have put in to upgrade our treatment works and pumpstations, particularly along the coastal line,” he added. He said this would be maintained until the festive season and beyond.
