Deputy Mayor urges vigilance during fire winter season
EThekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni led the Security and Emergency Services Committee on oversight visits to fire stations to assess the state of readiness ahead of the winter fire season.
RECENT fires at the Dakota and Sea Cow Lake informal settlements prompted eThekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni to visit various Municipal fire stations recently. She led a delegation of members from the Security and Emergency Services Committee on the oversight visit which aimed to assess the functioning of fire stations in the City. The committee’s visit took place just before the winter fire season as they wanted to ensure that firefighters are prepared with all the necessary resources to save lives.
Councillor Myeni lauded firefighters for putting their lives on the line to keep communities safe. “I want to convey my sincere appreciation to the men and women on the frontline of this essential service. The recent fires in the Dakota and Sea Cow Lake informal settlements were handled well. Had it not been for your dedication and commitment, lives could have been lost.” Dakota Informal Settlement residents have rebuilt after the Municipality assisted them with building material soon after the fire. Residents from the Sea Cow Lake Informal Settlement also received building material from the Deputy Mayor and are currently rebuilding their homes. “As the winter fire season continues, we urge communities to remain vigilant and not start unnecessary fires. Smokers should not throw burning cigarettes out of the window. Parents should make sure their children do not play near stoves, burning candles, or heaters”, she said.
To avoid loss of life and damage to property, follow these fire safety tips:
When cooking, stay in the kitchen whenever something is frying, grilling, or boiling.
Avoid electrical overloading and faulty electrical wiring.
Do not allow children to play with matches or lighters.
Ensure that you keep a safe distance from candles, gas fires, and heaters.
If your clothing catches fire; remember to stop, drop, and roll.
