City clamps down on illegal billboards

The City is taking a firm stance against businesses erecting illegal billboards.

THE City is clamping down on the erection of illegal billboards and is taking strong action against companies who continue to flout the law. The City’s building inspectorate removed an illegal billboard on private property in Berea West recently after they obtained a court order allowing them to proceed. The cost of the removal will be recovered from the company concerned. “The City is taking a tough stance on all illegal signage being erected and wants to remind companies doing such work that there are processes that need to be followed.

The relevant permissions need to sought to erect any billboards and signage,” commented Sbu Ndebele, Head of the Development Planning and Environment Management Unit. Anyone wishing to erect a sign in the eThekwini region needs to have the permission of the General Signage Department, who will evaluate the artwork and location where the sign will be erected. The City needs to ensure that the signage does not block the view of or distract motorists and that the structure of the signage is safe and secure and does not pose a danger to the public. These and other rules are essential to ensure that the public realm remains uncluttered and attractive. The General Signage and Advertising Department can be contacted on 031 311 7055 for guidelines.
