Buying local is lekker

Localisation has been highlighted by all spheres of government as a key policy for the recovery of the economy from the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is important to note however, that successful and sustainable localisation is dependent on many factors, some of which are not yet in place. Buying locally produced goods and sourcing local services, events and experiences is a good place to start.

The establishment of the City’s Buy Local, Invest Local Campaign sought to assist local businesses to rebuild and revitalise economic activity amid the challenges brought on by COVID-19 and the July civil unrest. The campaign’s mission is to invigorate the local economy and keep business revenues circulating within the City’s communities. It also aims to ensure local businesses are placed at the forefront of economic recovery.

The City is confident that the Buy Local drive will be the first stage of getting the City back on track economically. It will also act as a catalyst to stimulate future beneficiation and localisation initiatives at all levels of business activity, particularly for small businesses. This in turn will contribute towards long-term localisation strategies, export-led growth, local skilling, and enhanced employment.

Why Buy Local?
Results of the pandemic have shown that more localised economies were better able to deal with the impacts of the lockdown.
Buying locally keeps money in the community. When you buy locally, small business that are doing well are likely to hire more people, who then spend more money in the community.

Buying local is also better for the environment. Transportation of goods is procured locally meaning less carbon emissions, burning up fossil fuel contributing to pollution.

Buying locally has the added potential of enhancing customer service and experience. Local businesses are typically far more flexible and service oriented. They have a better understanding of their customers’ needs and tailor products and services according to the needs of their community, since they are also part of the same communities.
