Your vote counts

ON 29 MAY we will be heading to the polls to cast our votes for the 2024 national and provincial elections. I encourage all residents to exercise their democratic right to vote. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that they are ready to ensure a smooth and safe election. All voting stations will be open from 7am to 9pm on the day. The IEC has further confirmed that 80 percent of bulk material distribution has been completed, aside from sensitive and security material.

About 13 000 staff who will be responsible for special votes management, voting station management, area managers, and for the counting of votes have been trained. I therefore implore every South African citizen to practice their democratic right and vote on 29 May as the freedom and rights we enjoy today were hard won
through the sacrifices of many brave compatriots. Let us honour their legacy by participating in this crucial democratic process. Every vote counts in shaping the future of our nation This is a freedom that was hard fought for, and one we should not take lightly. The power to create the South Africa we envision is in your hand. I urge you to vote, and to do so wisely.

This May we also celebrate the 10th edition of Africa Month under the theme ‘Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom: Building a Better Africa and a Better World’. It is a moment of pride for the as we reflect on our achievements in advancing the social cohesion agenda. Our City has been at the forefront of promoting unity and inclusivity, making it a welcoming home for people from diverse backgrounds. Durban’s commitment to fostering social cohesion is evident in the tangible results we are witnessing. The recent report by InterNations, the leading network and guide for expats in 420 cities worldwide, highlighted Durban as a City where relocating is not only facilitated by the common language of English but also by the vibrant multicultural community that eases the settling-in process.

This positive feedback reaffirms that our efforts towards social cohesion are making a real difference in creating a harmonious environment for all residents. It is also worth mentioning that the African Union was officially launched in Durban, underscoring the City’s historical significance in the advancement of continental cooperation and unity. This milestone serves as a reminder of Durban’s and the Municipality’s pivotal role in promoting pan-Africanism and regional integration. As we commemorate Africa Month and reflect on our journey towards building a better Africa and a better world, let us draw inspiration from the progress we have made in promoting social cohesion within the City. Let us continue to champion inclusivity, understanding, and respect for all residents, regardless of their background or nationality.

Together, we can create a more cohesive, united, and prosperous Durban that serves as a shining example of the values of African unity and solidarity. Let us seize  this opportunity to reinforce our commitment to building a socially cohesive City where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has a sense of belonging. I am proud of the strides we have taken in advancing the social cohesion agenda, and I look forward to further collaboration and solidarity as we work towards a brighter future for all residents of Durban.
