FOR MANY residents, Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. This time also provides a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and reflect on peace and forgiveness. During this period, we also see many families travelling to various tourism destinations, including to the beautiful City of Durban. The projections indicate that around 1.3 million visitors will descend on the City over the Easter holidays. The hospitality industry will see hotel occupancy rates peak at an average of 65 percent, rising to 69 percent over the long weekend of 29 March to 1 April.
The local economy is set to receive a boost with direct spending estimated at approximately R2.7 billion and a GDP contribution of around R6.6 billion, with 11 904 employment opportunities created over this period. We extend our well wishes to the multitude of visitors that will descend on our shores during this period. We want to assure them that they didn’t make a mistake by choosing to come to Durban as we have more to offer. However, we urge visitors to obey our by-laws and to respect our law enforcement officers as they are there to ensure visitors and residents safety. As much as this a will be a long weekend, it does not mean that service delivery will come to a halt.
Our essential service departments will be operational and will be on standby to serve residents and visitors. I am also encouraged by our law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel who have committed to work round the clock this Easter weekend to ensure the safety of all and to respond to any emergencies. On a positive note, I am pleased to announce that a decision was taken to extend the debt relief programme by an additional four months during a recent Full Council meeting. This extension aims to provide interim relief to customers in arrears, with a focus on non-profit organisations, the indigent, deceased estates, and those experiencing economic hardships.
This extension aligns with the policy framework in place until 31 July 2024. A previous three-month payment relief period was approved, running from 1 October to 31 December 2023. A total of 15 992 customers enrolled in the payment arrangement, exceeding a total capital sum of R1 billion. Notably, R112 million was received as a down payment over the three month period. Customers seeking assistance are advised to enquire about applying for the Debt Relief Programme at their nearest Sizakala Centre or Municipal banking halls. On behalf of the City leadership and the people of eThekwini we wish our residents, our employees, and visitors a wonderful Easter break!
