Criminals beware. A R12-million Metro Police station was officially opened in Kwa-Mashu to the north of the city this week. The station, described by KZN provincial Police Commissioner Hamilton Ngidi as a “five-star establishment”, will service KwaMashu and neighbouring Inanda and Ntuzuma. Its opening coincided with a passing-out parade for 113 Metro Police constables, some of whom will be posted to the new station.

Speaking at the opening, which was attended by senior Metro and SAPS management, Mayor Obed Mlaba said there would be no place to hide for criminals. He reminded the newlyqualified officers of their duty to serve and protect the community. “You are working for the community. We need to ensure we satisfy our people and protect the community. We need to work within good ethics.

“The test is not in a classroom, but out there in the community. If you are a civil servant you are working for the community. We need to ensure that we satisfy them,” Mlaba said. Enforcement Metro Police Head Eugene Nzama congratulated the recruits and stressed they should be mindful of their functions: Traffic enforcement, bylaw enforcement and crime prevention.

Metro Police spokeswoman Snr Supt Joyce Khuzwayo said the new station would make access to police services easier for the people of the area. “They will not have to walk far to get to a station. The community will have a close relationship with the station. It will also serve as a deterrent to criminals,” Khuzwayo said.
