Loss Of Electricity Supply To Durban South Areas

Damaged tower in Durban South Area

EThekwini Electricity Department has suffered a major supply problem in the Prospecton, Isipingo and surrounding areas, which occurred at 10:52 am yesterday (22 July, 2008). Although the department is working as quickly as possible to restore the electricity supply, it is unclear when this will happen. “Our first priority is restoring power to the affected area,” said Tony Dold from the Electricity Department.

At the outset, we would like to apologise to the businesses and residents in the area and any inconvenience is regretted. “The temporary restoration of supply can take up to a week but we are trying to get power restored before then,” continued Dold

The problem occurred when a transmission tower, carrying 132 kV lines between the Lotus Park and Isipingo substations, broke off at its remaining secured leg after the mounting bolts on three legs of the tower were removed. This caused the tower to fall on its side.

It is alleged that the theft of metal, for its scrap value, was the root cause of the incident. Police have apprehended a suspect and he has been taken in for questioning. Investigators from the municipality were quick on the scene and are currently following up on leads.

Thousands of customers are expected to be without electricity including large industries in the South of Durban. Customers are advised to bear with the situation over the next few days while emergency maintenace crews work on site to restore power. The utility assures affected customers that every effort is being made to restore supply as a matter of urgency. “We have workmen on the scene and we will be working round the clock to ensure that power is restored immediately.”
