Fine Discount Facts17 July, 2008 The City’s offer of a 50% discount, to anyone who has received a fine from the Metro Police since the beginning of 2005, has been favorably received by many. But it has also prompted many queries. Some motorists who had already paid older fines have asked whether they can apply for the discount. Unfortunately, it only applies to fines issued by the Metro Police since January 1, 2005. Anyone who paid a fine before the discount was announced is, unfortunately, unable to apply for the discount now. Rajen Reddy, Senior Manager of Fines, said payments by installment were also not possible. “Unfortunately, we cannot accept payments in installments with regards to this project. “If people wish to pay in installments, they will need to take this up with the relevant courts and this will be dealt with outside the scope of this initiative,” said Reddy. He encouraged motorists to act quickly because the discount offer expires on 4 September. The Metro Police’s warrant unit has been briefed to take action against defaulters as soon as the grace period ends and daily roadblocks would be held to net offenders. Those wanting to verify their traffic fines status, must call 031 311 2860/1/2/3/6 on weekdays from 6am to 6pm. |
