Crackdown on Worst Motorists

17 February, 2010

By Khaya Sengani

Taxi drivers make up the majority of eThekwini’s 50 worst traffic offenders, the Metro Police have revealed. These top offenders owe the Municipality a total of R 4.4- million in outstanding fines. One of these top offenders is Sibusiso Dlamini, 29, the taxi driver who is serving 40 years’ for throwing Kavisha Seevnarain off the 60m Mkomazi River Bridge. Dlamini, who drove a taxi sporting the personalised number plate Glayer1ZN, was due to appear in court in connection with the R90 650 he allegedly owes in fines.

The top offender is the owner of a Toyota Hi-ace ND 151360, with R121 550 owing and has 101 warrants out for his arrest. The driver of NUZ 14691, who has racked up R139 980 in fines is serving time in an overseas jail. Deputy Head of Metro Police Titus Malaza said, “This type of exposure helps create awareness, which encourages payment of fines.” The Metro Police is staging roadblocks and visiting offenders’ homes and places of work to serve warrants in an effort to recover the money. The introduction soon of a sophisticated automatic number plate recognition system will make it even harder for offenders to dodge the police.

‘Inconvenience’

“To avoid any inconvenience, members of the public are urged to settle their fines as soon as possible,” Malaza said. Those who already have warrants issued against them can still settle without going to court. “They should contact us without delay to arrange payment.” To discuss your fines or for more information, call the Metro Police at 031 311 2857.
