Big Buck Bridge To Cut Congestion

MEN AT WORK: The Khangela Bridge, joining Curnick Ndlovu (Sydney) to Bayhead Roads

Work on the R150-million Khangela Bridge is nearing completion on Bayhead Road, promising to ease traffic congestion and provide better access to the city’s vital container terminal cargo hub.

Deputy Head of the City’s Strategic Transport Planning unit, Logan Moodley, said heavy traffic congestion had been a daily problem on Bayhead and South Coast roads because of the large number of heavy vehicles using them to get in and out of the container terminal on Langeberg Road.

“But this will soon be a thing of the past,” he said. The bridge will span some 270m from Curnick Ndlovu (Sydney) to South Coast roads, five lanes of traffic in both directions. It will link the intersection of South Coast and Bayhead Roads, running over the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Southern Freeway, to Curnick Ndlovu and Glastonbury roads on either end. Moodley said Transnet had helped fund the project.

Unrelenting
“The unrelenting increase of traffic coming in and out of the port in the recent years necessitated construction of the bridge”. He said the City had carried out studies over the past 15 years and arrived at the decision to secure funding and implement the project. Construction is expected to be finished by July next year. Moodley said there would not be any “major interruptions” for motorists during the construction period.
