The Parks Department's technical training requirements for all levels of staff are provided by the Horticultural Training Division.

Non-technical or generic training needs are co-ordinated through the Corporate Service Unit.

In service training for horticultural students completing the academic requirements of the National Diploma through a Technikon includes nursery, display, botanic gardens, maintenance and development of parks and open spaces, recreation facilities, beach front, street trees, turf management, conservation, landscape planning and design.

Students must satisfy the practical aspect of the trade and pass an examination administered by the National Green Industries Examination Board.

The division also co-ordinates and presents two practical contact courses per annum for Technikon students who have received no practical training.

A Park Supervisors Training program is carried out during the winter months as part of the Department strategy for "Growing our own timber".
