NorthernGeographically situated to the North of the city, from the Beachfront in the south to Corovoca, Mount Mariah in the north west and Glenashley to the north east. Serving a residential area with a population of 80 000 people, and two pockets of light industry at Springfield and Briardene. Recreation opportunities exist at Kings Park Sports Complex, consist of an indoor Olympic pool, soccer stadium, cycle and athletic tracks, and two privately managed 18 hole golf courses, Windsor Park and Durban Country Club. The Beachfront not far from the City Centre is a mixture of hard and soft landscaping catering for all surf related recreation activities. The Amphitheatre, built by hand during the 1930's depression, in a formal garden layout with annuals and groundcovers. The centre lawns are used on sundays for a flea market. The Umgeni River estuary and mangroves are a home to a wide variety of aquatic birds that can be easily spotted from the walking trail on the north bank along Riverside Road. The Japanese Gardens is eight hectare in extent, landscaped in the Japanese style including features as bridges, ponds and gazebos. The gardens provide passive recreation creating a quiet atmosphere and a welcome break from the city and are popular on weekends and public holidays with families enjoying a day out and a braai. Horticultural services are provided throughout the area in the form of maintained parks, open space and conservation areas (D’MOSS). The three sports fields provided an opportunity for the active sports such as soccer and cricket. |
