North WesternApproximately 20km north of Durban, lies the North Western section of the Ethekwini Parks Department. This area comprises of 3 major residential areas: Phoenix, Inanda and Ntuzuma. Phoenix has an approximate population of 250 000 people and 34 000 dwellings. The area is comprised of approximately 1200 hectares of green space which falls under the control of the Parks Department. This is made up as follows : MAJOR PARKS
COMMUNITY AREA 17 - Ficus bengalensis - planted over one hundred years ago by the first Indian indentured labours who came to uplift the South African economy. Also planted in this enclosed area are trees such as Albizia julbrissin and Maytenus procumbens which are over 100 hundred years old. Adjoining this fenced up area is a mini park with play area for the community. Within this area are facilities such as the Library, Clinic, and the development of a Swimming pool. Other areas that will be of interest to foreign shoppers is the Phoenix Plaza, Gem City, Raza Plaza, Whitehouse Shopping Centre and the adjoining Mount Edgecombe shopping complexes for shopping conveniences. The Mount Edgecombe Golf Course which is situated about 3 km outside of Phoenix is also of interest. 110 Playlots with playground equipment which is approximately 52 hectares. Open spaces - which comprises of small areas of open space around dwellings serve as "kick about" areas for children. And large tracts of open space, used for so-called "passive" recreation. Marginal land which is too steep for building or recreational use remains as natural vegetation and is included in the D’MOSS system. Total are 775 hectares is maintained in this way.
