Library Membership
The library offers three types of membership
1.Individual
Free to users who reside / work / study in the Ethekwini Municipal
area.
2.Institutional
Free to schools and other organisations in the Ethekwini Municipal
area.
3.Visitors
Open to users who require temporary membership at a fee.
HOW TO APPLY FOR A CARD
You can apply for a card by submitting a completed application form at
any Branch..
You must provide all the required information and produce all the required
documents
as indicated below.
If you are 18 years or older you qualify for an ADULT CARD
To apply : please bring
- Your original barcoded identity document and a certified photocopy of
the same for our records
- Proof of you current address.
- Your consolidated billing account statement (ie: electricity, water or
rates account )
- Identity document of account holder (ie: electricity, water or rates
account )
If you are under 18 years of age you qualify for a JUNIOR CARD
To apply : please bring
- Your original barcoded identity document or birth certificate and a
certified copy photocopy of the same for our records
- Your parent or guardian must sign your application form
- Your parent / guardian must supply all of the above documents (as for
adult membership )
- If you are 12 years and older you qualify for adult privileges with
parents / guardian consent.
If you want to apply for an INSTITUTIONAL CARD
To apply : please bring.
- All the documents as for an adult card.
- An application letter from the institution on an official letterhead or
with an official stamp
If you want to apply for a VISITORS CARD ( adults only )
To apply :
- You must complete an adult membership form.
- If you are a South African citizen you must produce your Identity
Document or a Passport., if you are a foreign visitor.
Proof of your current address in the Ethekwini Municipal area.
- You will be asked to pay a refundable deposit..
- You will also be asked to pay a subscription fee every month for each
item you borrow. This amount will not be refunded.
OTHER INFORMATION.
When can you collect your card
- You can collect your card as soon as you receive an acceptance letter
from the library.
- When collecting your card you will be asked to produce the acceptance
letter and your identity document so that we can verify that the card is
being issued to the right person
If your card is LOST or STOLEN
- Notify the Branch Librarian immediately by telephone so that a BLOCK
can be put on your card . A reference number will be issued.
- You will be required to complete a lost / stolen form in the
library.
- You are responsible for all items borrowed on your card up to the time
you have signed the lost / stolen form .
Replacing your library card
- You will be asked to pay a replacement fee.
- All items on loan must be returned and all outstanding fines must be
settled before a new card can be issued.
Renewing your membership
- Your membership will be renewed every two years.
- You will be asked to complete a re-registration form to verify your
address , telephone numbers and other personal details
Your responsibilities as a member
- Receiving a membership card means that you have undertaken to abide by
the library's rules and by-laws as stated on the application from.
- Always produce a library card when you want to borrow an item.. .
- You are responsible for all items borrowed on your card
- You must inform the librarian of any change of your personal
details.
If materials are lost or damaged you are responsible for replacement
costs.
- If materials are returned late you are liable for fines incurred..
- You may not have more than one card registered in your name.
