The eThekwini Health Unit provides comprehensive primary health care services to communities, thus enabling people to practice healthy lifestyles for a better quality of life.

 Health Programmes

The Health Department provides treatment and work in the following areas:

  • Clinical illness and injury
  • Chronic disease management
  • Anti- and postnatal care for pregnant mothers
  • Contraception
  • Counselling in pregnancy termination
  • Management of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Immunisation
  • Monitoring of the growth and development of children
  • Child safety, including poisoning, injury and abuse 

Communicable Disease

The Communicable Disease Centre focuses on the surveillance, prevention, management and control of communicable diseases.

Social Development

The Social Development programme ensures improved access to socially related services to vulnerable groups which include street children and children in general, the elderly, women and disabled people.

Pollution Control and Risk Management

The Pollution Control and Risk Management Programme engages in air, water and land pollution control, monitors air quality and the control of food premises, monitors and controls of scheduled trade, facilitates access to water and sanitation and implements bylaws.
