One of the primary objectives of traffic engineering is the
identification of accident black spots so that some preventative
measures may be implemented.
With this objective in mind the Branch maintains an extensive data
base of all reported accidents.
A computerised data base of road accident occurring within the Durban
Municipal Area has been maintained by this Department since 1975.
The accident database program "collide" was operational for a number
of years on the VAX Computer. This used accident information extracted
from the SAP352 accident report form. In May 2000 a new OAR accident
form was introduced countrywide. As this form contained more information
than the SAP352 accident form, extensive modification to the accident
system was necessary and hence the sophisticated PC based "impact"
database was introduced.
Accident analysis at specified locations through to area reports may
be generated on demand.
Apart from having the responsibility of maintaining a database on all
accidents on public roads within the eThekwini area, since 2000 the
Traffic Studies branch has operated as the custodian of accident forms
to the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). In responding to
requests from attorneys, insurance companies and members of the public
for copies of accident report forms, revenue is generated by the Traffic
Studies Branch.
Since 1990 accidents occurring within the Durban Metropolitan
Transport Area have been monitored on behalf of the Durban Metropolitan
Transport Advisory Board .
