CBD Pedestrian Awareness Campaign - March 27 to 31

The CBD Pedestrian Awareness Campaign will take place at Warwick Avenue from March 27 to 31, 2006. The aim of the campaign is to increase the road safety awareness to drivers and pedestrians, and thereby assist in reducing the number of pedestrian accidents.

The campaign will take place at the intersections of Canongate Road/Warwick Avenue/Leopold Street and Old Dutch Road/Warwick Avenue. Statistics indicate that these intersections have high occurrences of pedestrian accidents.

During the course of 2005, 730 accidents occurred along Warwick Avenue.  Of the total 179 (24%) involved pedestrians.

In the year 2004, 762 total accidents occurred and 223 (29%) of this total involved pedestrians. During the year 2003, a total of 685 accidents occurred of which 194 (28%) pedestrians were involved.

Educators will be strategically positioned at each intersection. For the safety and visibility of the educators they will be wearing red T-shirts and reflective jackets.

Road Safety personnel will educate pedestrians on the following:

  • To use a controlled crossing if one is provided.
  • Keep between the solid white lines.
  • Watch for moving vehicles, especially when vehicles are turning.
  • Walk briskly.
  • Only start to cross when the green man shows.
  • Should the red man appear whilst you are crossing, continue crossing.
