Domestic Service

DSW provides a domestic refuse removal service to the residents of the eThekwini municipal area. Domestic refuse means refuse of a kind normally produced or generated on residential premises, and the manure or dung of any animal or bird kept as a domestic pet, but shall not include sand, earth, liquid matter, garden refuse or the carcass of any animal or special domestic refuse. (Garden refuse from residential premises may be disposed of by means of DSW's Blue Garden Refuse Bag Service or disposed of at any of the Garden Refuse Sites in the Durban Area)

All refuse must be stored in suitable refuse receptacles preferably sited on a shaded concrete floor area.

All collection and removal costs associated with this service, excluding the hire cost of the 240 litre containers, are included in the annual rates payment per property.

Customers have a choice of two products for the storage of refuse:

• 240 Litre Wheeled Refuse Containers
  
  In high density residential areas such as cluster homes, flats, etc., our 240 litre wheeled containers are popular as they use relatively less floor space than black bins, whilst providing relatively larger storage volumes. A nominal hire rental per month is raised, which for ease of payment is included in the monthly Consolidated Bill Account. These are cleared on a regular basis on pre-determined days.

• 85 litre Black Plastic Bags (Bin Liners)
  
  DSW marked black plastic bags are delivered to homes to be used as bin liners for an 85 litre receptacle, and are cleared on a weekly basis, also on predetermined days. No additional charge is made for the supply of the bags up to a maximum of 2 per week per property. Neverthelessall domestic refuse is removed irrespective of the plastic bag used.

Blue Garden Refuse Bag Service

In addition to the above domestic refuse removal service, DSW offers an optional, convenient and easy garden refuse disposal service. Packs of 12 blue bags may either be obtained:

on contract whereby the packs are delivered each month usually at the end of the month and the charge is included in the monthly Consolidated Bill Account, or from one of the many retail outlets around the city. A contract can be arranged by calling the nearest DSW office or the central Helpline 031 302 4804, or by ordering online - online order form. Collection of the full blue bags takes place on the same day as the domestic refuse service in most areas.

Service to Businesses

A range of services and products are offered to businesses in the Municipal Area. The service for which promulgated tariffs are applied is provided as an alternative to that supplied by private enterprise, and includes the following:

Integrated Waste Management Service

DSW's commitment to waste diversion, waste minimisation and recycling is reinforced through our Integrated Waste Management approach. The triple R's (reduce, reuse and recycle) have become key elements of waste management as waste materials are resources which, if given sufficient consideration and careful management, can lead to cost savings and thus increased profitability to business. We encourage our customers to achieve our goals by providing on-site recycling and source separation. This has been successfully applied in many businesses.

Wheeled Container Service

There are 2 sizes of wheeled refuse containers available:

• 240 Litre Wheeled Refuse Containers
  
  This is the standard two wheeled container with a hinged lid and handle
• 600 Litre Wheeled Refuse Containers

  This is more suited to customers who produce a higher volume of refuse or bulkier waste as it has a wider frame and opening, and rides on four casters.

• Skip Service

Skips are steel containers offered to businesses who produces high volume bulky refuse. Builders rubble, timber, glass, scrap metal and garden wastes are the more common types of refuse that necessitate the use of skips. We have skips with capacities ranging from 5.5 to 27 cubic metres.

Compaction Unit Service

DSW provides a clearance service where our vehicles will collect customer-owned compaction units, transport the refuse to one of the DSW owned landfill sites and dump the waste. It is advantageous for the customer to purchase a spare container which DSW stores at no additional cost. It then requires only one visit to the customer's premises as the empty container is installed immediately after the full container is removed. This results in a saving to the customer as only one visit is required.

Bulk Refuse Service

When customers require a personalised service, bulk refuse will be removed directly from a refuse storage area. i.e. the refuse hasn't been placed in any container. One of our Cleansing Officers will visit the site to quote on the service. Telephone the Helpline on 031 302 4804.

Special Events Service

DSW provides refuse removal service at all kinds of major events including marathons, company sports days, school fetes, fun runs, etc. Our service is tailored to meet each customers needs, thus enabling the organisers of an event to host a clean, environmentally friendly function.
