| A
clean environment depends on every individual in the community playing
his or her part and not only depositing of their own waste correctly but
also encouraging others to do the same. One way of taking on this
responsibility is to become involved in one of the many projects, for all
sectors of the community, that are offered by Keep eThekwini
Beautiful. |

WHO
Keep eThekwini Beautiful (KEB) is a
non profit community based education programme concerned with enabling all
sectors of the community to dispose of their waste correctly.
The Association is a partnership between the private and public sectors,
with staff of the Association being drawn from Durban Solid Waste and
volunteer support being sought from all sectors of the
community.
WHAT
The challenge facing KEB is that for a number of
reasons individuals dispose of their waste incorrectly where they work,
where they recreate and even where they live.
The
long term aim of KEB is therefore to ensure that in each community there
are:
-
Suitable and acceptable regulations to govern waste
management;
-
That these regulations are enforced;
-
That facilities and technology for waste handling are adequate
and appropriate, and;
-
That members of the community are through participation educated
to dispose of their waste correctly.
When
all facets of waste management are adequately addressed the return to the
community is a cleaner environment.
WHERE
KEB operates in the entire eThekwini
Municipal area.
WHEN
Education of the community to improve
attitudes and behaviour regarding the way that they dispose of their waste
is a long term process. The activities of KEB are permanent and long
term.
HOW
The participative education method used by KEB is the Clean Community
System developed by Keep America Beautiful.
Through this System waste management: education programmes have
been initiated within the following sectors of the
community;
-
Formal and informal residential areas;
-
Formal and informal businesses;
