EThekwini Municipality’s Sustainability Best Practice Portfolio

Inception: 2003-2004 / 2004-2005 / 2005-2006 (Annual Publication)
Key KPI addressed:  Programme 3: Ensure the long term sustainability of natural resource base

Background

Following eThekwini’s participation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002, it became clear that the Municipality needed to document and promote local government activities that contribute towards improved sustainability and biodiversity protection. The Sustainability Best Practice Portfolio is an annual publication which profiles work undertaken by different departments and showcases key projects where the Municipality has either been a partner or acted alone to achieve innovation in implementing projects leading the way in environmental sustainability. These projects have established Durban as a world leader in this field.

The Project

The Sustainability Best Practice Portfolio:
Highlights the value of strategic and operational efforts focused on improved sustainability and encourage further action by municipal staff;
Communicates the Municipality's approach and contribution to biodiversity planning and activities to local residents and ratepayers;
Markets the Municipality's biodiversity work to local and international funding agencies with a view to securing further funds in support of this work.
This project was initiated in January 2003 and is ongoing.

Sustainability Best Practice Portfolio 2005/06: Special Edition - Climate Change

Climate change has been identified as the single biggest threat faced by our social, economic, infrastructural and biophysical environments with a key pressure impacting our natural resource base. The Sustainability Best Practice Portfolio: Special Edition – Climate Change showcases efforts to address climate change. This edition profiles different projects which promote the protection of natural resource base, energy efficiency and renewable energy. This special edition has been compiled as part of eThekwini Municipality’s contribution to the British Council Zero Carbon City initiative, a global British Council Campaign. This campaign aims to raise awareness and stimulate debate about climate change and the energy challenges facing the world’s greatest cities.
