EThekwini Municipality Buildings Energy Efficiency Roll-out Programme
INCEPTION: 2005/2006
KEY KPI addressed: Programme 7: Develop and implement municipal pollution reduction and climate protection. As part of its ongoing commitment to climate change mitigation, eThekwini Municipality has completed the Municipality’s Buildings Energy Efficiency Roll-Out Programme. This is the second phase of a 2 phase programme which began in 2005 and was completed in 2006. Phase 2 involved the auditing of 11 Municipal buildings, recommendations for improved energy efficiency and reduction of climate change impacts as well as the implementation of some no-cost and low-cost measures. EThekwini Municipality commissioned energy audits of 11 if its buildings; City Engineers, Clairwood Fresh Produce Market, Kings Park Pool, City Hall, Florence Mkhize, eThekwini Water and Sanitation, eThekwini Health and the Municipal Library. The audits were undertaken by an internal Energy Team, made up of various representatives from the following departments; Environmental Management and Architecture and Buildings Departments and led by an external energy efficiency specialist. KEY RESULTS: Across the 11 buildings audited, a total of 23 recommendations were identified, including low-cost, medium-cost and high -cost options for implementation; The collective payback on all recommendations identified is 2 years. Payback on all low cost measures achieved collectively would be 12 months; The total energy saving identified is equivalent to 19% of the combined annual energy usage of these buildings. If the low-cost and no-cost opportunities are considered alone, the annual saving would be equivalent to 6% of the combined buildings’ energy usage. The initiation of the Energy Efficiency Awareness Pilot Project at City Engineers building was identified as key component. Please see link below to access our documents. |
