Victoria Embankment: Yacht Mole Precinct

The Victoria Embankment forms a significant interface zone between the CBD and the Bay.
Within this district the Yacht basin is considered the core marine activity node, with the potential to be redeveloped into a high quality public waterfront, focused on the existing yachting and other marine sports.
Work undertaken to date comprises the following:
- Upgrading of the vehicular and pedestrian access to the precinct, which is also the primary entrance to the entire bay waterfront, with the construction of two new traffic lanes, a landscaped traffic circle, automated level crossing gates, paved pedestrian spaces, fencing, feature lighting, planting and street furniture.
- Dredging to restore adequate water depth for the yacht moorings, kerbing and asphalt overlay of the mole car park and construction of a timber public viewing deck, with the 2005 round the world Clipper Race as the catalyst for these improvements.
- Framework Plan for the envisaged waterfront of some 20 000 m2 total floor space.
- Environmental Scoping Report prepared and approved.
- Preparatory work for the conclusion of a new head lease from Transnet to facilitate the development and for rezoning of the site for the range of waterfront uses contemplated.
Other work undertaken in the district includes the following:
- Facilitation of the privately developed Wilson’s Wharf node, a popular retail, entertainment and restaurant venue.
- Development of the Maritime Park, a landscaped car park and open space, incorporating marine artifacts, adjacent to the maritime Museum.
- Initial improvements at the Maritime Museum, namely paving, mosaic table and bench tops and umbrellas.
- Restoration of the Victorian balustrade, installation of antique style street lighting and road widening along Maritime Place and Boatman’s Road, the linkages between the development nodes.
