Umhlanga Town Centre Renewal

Chartwell Drive is the main thoroughfare of Umhlanga’s commercial centre. Despite an earlier urban design treatment, the streetscape presented a generally run-down and shabby appearance.
Components and features of the current remodeling project are as follows:
- Clear demarcation of traffic lanes and parking bays.
- Moving of the public space from an island situation to the roadsides, closer to the building frontages.
- Decorative walkway paving using colored, textured concrete pavers and cobbles.
- Tree planting, both palms and indigenous shade trees, as well as ground cover planting.
- New street lighting, with moulded light pole bases with a lighthouse motif.
- Themed street furniture: litter bins and benches.
