Gandhi Centenary Park
Within the Chatsworth Town Centre, a street block reserved as a public open space remained a “park'' in name only for some years, until funding was allocated and the site transformed into the present gardens during the 1990s. This project was undertaken by the Parks Department with design input from the Landscape Architecture Division. Working with the slope of the site, a continuous water course was introduced; other features include brick paved pathways, a gazebo and a small amphitheatre. The park was named to comemorate the centenary of M K Gandhi’s arrival in South Africa. A bust of Ghandi and plaques inscribed with some of his well-known expressions were erected. The park serves as a pleasant place for relaxation as well as for movement between the various commercial areas in Chatsworth. |
