The purpose of the Engineering Unit is to provide infrastructure to residents, businesses and building services to Council management, to enable residents and businesses in the eThekwini municipal area to engage in their social and economic activities and enable Council management to deliver outputs that satisfy customer needs resulting in satisfied social and economic needs

Key Performance Areas:

• to design, develop, improve and maintain a safe and efficient road network so as to satisfy both the individual and business needs of the City;
• the provision and maintenance of the City’s network of underground stormwater pipes and culverts;
• the management of all engineering aspects of the coastal zone;
• the provision of an integrated and sustainable architectural service;
• the provision of an appropriate and cost effective map and land information database and surveying service.

In addition through its Project Executives the following key areas are co-ordinated on behalf of the cluster:

• Infrastructure Spatial Plan
• ABM infrastructure co-ordination
• Productivity/Performance Management
• Infrastructure Management
