Harbour widening moves ahead

05 March, 2005

The KwaZulu Natal Department of Agriculture and environmental Affairs (DAEA) has authorized the widening and deepening of the Port of Durban entrance Channel.

This is another step forward in the process. Once this is approved, all that otherwise remains for the work to begin as planned next year, is the financial approval from NPA’s parent body Transnet.

The National Ports Authority (NPA) proposes widening the channel into Durban Bay from about 130m to 220m bottom width by relocating the breakwater (North Pier). At the same time the entrance channel and subsequent channels within the Port will be deepened from about 12.8m to 16m at the port side and 18m at the seas side to allow access to larger vessels.

Applications to appeal the environmental approval may be lodged with the MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Prof LBG Ndabadaba, Private Bag X9059 Pietermaritzburg on or before 10 September 2004 and setting out facts as well as grounds of appeal including supporting documents. Copies of the Record of Decision issued 11 August 2004 may be obtained from Mrs Ramdeen or Mr Ngubane at the DAEA offices at the above address or from Mr G Fletcher gfletcher@gibb.co.za
