 Umkhumbane

Durbanites and tourists are invited to come and connect at the Umkhumbane Flea Market – the City’s exciting new grassroots trading spot, where the traditional meets the contemporary. The market promises to be vibey with a variety of things to do and see in safe and pleasant surroundings.

The market is named after the Umkhumbane River which flows past the well-located site on the corner of Bellair and Booth Roads next to the Sasol Garage. It’s a short drive from the University along Francois Road or past the Pavilion from the Westville side.

Dubbed the flea market “where people connect”, the vision is that Durbanites and tourists will enjoy a leisurely shop on Sundays, ambling past busking musicians and dancers; to browse at stalls selling traditional ethnic wear, funky clothing, rich textiles, African curios and carvings, jewellery, and ceramics.

Institutional Development and Communications Manager, Njabulo Maseko said:  “It’s a win-win opportunity for all – Durbanites can have fun whilst livelihoods are sustained. Economic activity in Cato Manor is mainly survivalist in nature and our team at Cato Manor Area Based Management has facilitated the development of the new flea market as part of our strategy to enable residents to compete in the local economy.”

“We have worked with a number of co-operatives and are delighted to see how many stall holders have signed up. We urge the people of Durban to support this enterprise so that local traders can start making a viable income,” Maseko said.

So come and shop or even sit awhile and enjoy freshly ground coffee and muffins at the food market while the little ones go off on a pony ride or get rid of some energy on the jumping castle.

Umkhumbane Flea Market will be open every Sunday from 9am – 4pm. There is safe parking and clean toilets.

Traders interested in running a stall must contact Nathi Zondi at the ABM on (031) 261 6640.
