Inanda Trail
With more history per square centimetre than anywhere else in South Africa, the Inanda Trail provides a unique insight into Durban’s past.
Rich in both African and Indian culture, the valleys of Inanda have preserved a remarkable heritage. Visit the Phoenix Settlement, where the great 20th Century leader, Mahatma Gandhi, devised his philosophy of passive resistance. While Gandhi’s original home was destroyed in the turbulence of the 1980s.
It has now been rebuilt and dedicated as a monument to peace and justice. Further up the hill is Ohlange, the school founded by John L. Dube, the first President of the ANC.
Dube’s house has been proclaimed a national monument, and you can pay your respects at the graveside of this famous teacher, politician and visionary.
The Inanda Seminary, one of the oldest and best-known girls’ schools in southern Africa, is just a short drive away. Opened in 1869, the school has educated an impressive array of black women, many of whom have gone on to become political and business leaders.
Finally, explore the Shembe Church at Ebuhleni, the largest of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal, with over two million members. The prophet Isaiah Shembe founded this fascinating religion, with its unique dress style, dance form and doctrine, some 100 years ago. See our story 'The Shembe's Rise to the Lord' for more details.
