Mammals Home Page

From small beginnings in 1989 (when the mammal collection comprised 770 specimens), the Museum’s mammal collection has grown rapidly, and currently comprises some 10,500 specimens. This represents a growth of almost 10,000 specimens in 18 years, over 500 per year. Together with the ‘Pringle Collection’ of some 2000 mammals (on permanent loan from the Natal Museum in Pietermaritzburg, and mostly collected by former Director of the Natal Museum, John Pringle), this brings the combined total to 12,500 mammal specimens, comprising study skins, skulls, a few skeletons and about 1700 specimens preserved in 70% ethanol (most initially fixed in formaldehyde).
