KZN Theatre, Arts & Events Diary October - November 200813 October, 2008 Catalina Theatre, Wilsons Wharf: 7 Oct - 2 Nov “A musical integration of sounds from different walks of life interpreted by the natives dwelling and working the City of Durban, in the late fifties and throughout the decades to follow,” says director Henry ‘Faca” Kulu”. It is the sound of music rooted on the melodies and harmonies conceived by the melting pot of diverse cultures that constructed the walls and the streets of Durban city. “This accapela musical comedy is based on a reminisce of two old men, George Zuma (Msholozi) and Khabazela (Ntwana) Mkhize, who are the former members of a musical group, also named after that style of singing, if not that sound of music ‘Native Blues’ that existed back then. What actually triggers the reminisce, of these two old buddies, is the accusation from Khabazela, claiming that George used the group to win the lover of his life, and his still current wife for 44yrs. Together, Msholozi and Khabazela unfold the events of the times, in a serial of flashbacks, whilst in the company of the four other boys to justify their stands. The play is a journey via avenues in order for each to get his point across,” says Kulu. Natives Blues performed by: Siyabonga Zuma (as George Msholozi); Thabani Mhlangu (as Sguqa); Phumlani Mkhize (as Ntwana Khabazela); Bhuti Manzi (as Manzini); Sifiso Innocent Mngadi (as Nsimbi); and Bonga ‘Mtshotshovu’ Zulu (as Mathambo) The Catalina Theatre is still functioning thanks to the incredible generosity and support from Rainbow Chicken. This time, the team are tackling two very different pieces: John Pielmeier’s Agnes of God, and Sybill Pearson’s madcap comedy Sally and Marsha. Directed by Tanya van der Walt, and with sets by Stephen Woodroffe, Agnes of God tackles the difficult subject of faith and belief. The play tells the story of Agnes, played by Janna Ramos-Violante a young novice nun who is found unconscious on the floor of her cell one night, the body of her strangled newborn in the rubbish bin. The play examines the events leading up to this terrible murder, through the eyes of the Court-appointed psychiatrist, Martha Livingstone played by Tamar Meskin who seeks to understand exactly what has happened. In her attempts, she is confronted by the protective Mother Superior, portrayed by Alison Cassels whose belief that Agnes is a saint impairs her judgement. Sally and Marsha directed by Tamar Meskin and also plays on sets created by Stephen Woodroffe. The play features Josette Eales as Sally, a woman who has recently moved to New York from South Dakota to follow the promise of her husband’s very unfruitful career in sales and Libby Allen as Marsha a true-to-the stereotype neurotic New Yorker who lives in the flat opposite the hall. We follow the two very different women in a very funny journey to becoming friends. The plays run alternating nights at the Square Space theatre on the UKZN campus from 30 October to 9 November.
