Youth innovation winners crowned
​Winners of the 2020 Youth Innovation Challenge.
The 4th Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) winners are set to embark on a year-long programme with Innovate Durban through its Start Up Support Programme. This will provide them with business and technical skills as well as opportunies to further protoype their innovations.

The YIC took place recently at the Innovation Co-Lab in Cato Manor and was joined by Derivco, a company trailblazing the design and development of technology. They assited with the judging of solutions. The YIC is a flagship progarmme of Innovate Durban in which a group of about 60 to 80 youth between the ages of 18 and 35 are taken through the innovation pipeline centred around finding innovative solutions for challenges facing residents and businesses. Implementation includes upskilling workshops, coding training, pitching sessions and group solution demonstration events.

The YIC, in collaboration with the Municiplaity, focused around six Smart City Pillar challenges. Namely Smart Government, Smart Environment, Smart Living, Smart Infrastructure, Smart Economy and Smart People.

The winners announced at the close of the challenge were:
1st Prize Winners – Team BlueChips Bytes: Kiren Sewnath and Tashleen Kasipershad
2nd Prize Winners – Team O’Waste: Zibusiso Mhlanga and Elijah Djan
3rd Prize Winners – Team Royaume: Andre Adkins, Francis Djumo, Sipho Sithole and Sphephelo Mlunguwana.

Winners of the Zutari Floating Trophy weas Team Saterco with members Sipho Mabunda and Nkosinathi Mkhize for Student Excellence while the Woman in Design Award was presented to Coceka Mngweba.

Partners expressed the importance of innovation in the social and economic transformation of the region. Itayi Mandonga, of Software AG, highlighted the important role that the YIC and facilities such as the Innovation Co-lab have in providing opportunities, access and delivering outcomes.
The Municipality’s Chief Digital Officer, Lunga Madlala reiterated the Municipality’s commitment to innovation and the role of digital transformation versus digital optimisation.
