Ward 84 pool renovations underway
THE Municipality is spending a fortune on the rehabilitation of ward 84 pool in uMlazi BB-Section as a way of investing in skills development.

According to ward 84 Councillor Bheki Phungula, the pool has not been operating for three years due to a massive water leak. “The investigation, conducted by Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit indicated that the pool scum line wasn’t properly functioning, always on a drop and constantly needed fill-up.

Water readings done cited enormous water loss hence it was closed,” he said. However, Councillor Phungula said he is relieved that the problem is finally being solved following several engagement with the Unit. He said residents are also pleased to hear that the pool will soon be operational. “Residents were constantly asking me when the pool was going to be fixed,” he said, adding that pool facilities are no longer for leisure purposes but, are also utilised for career development for aspiring swimmers who need to practise regularly.

Councillor Phungula said the renovations should take about seven months, adding that the contractor started on site in February and is expected to complete the renovations in August. Ensuring that job opportunities are created, Councillor Phungula said the contractor employed about 12 local people to work on this project.
