THE annual Vodacom Durban July saw over 50 000 attendees put their best fashion foot forward at the premier racing event held on 7 July. The event had a positive economic impact on the City with an economic contribution of more than R175 million says Deputy City Manager of Economic Development and Planning Phillip Sithole.

Another added bonus was that more than 3 000 temporary jobs were created as a result of the event, he said. The horse racing event, held at the Greyville Racecourse, attracted the who’s who and saw a number of local celebrities, politicians and business people dressed to the nines in keeping with the race day theme: “It is time”. EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede, looking resplendent in a flowing light blue and pink dress with intricate silver embellishments, described the race day as “beautiful” adding that she was excited to be there.

“I am happy because of the economic benefit this race brings to the City. It is good to see so many people out here enjoying our warm weather and friendly people. It is clear that people are having a really good time and enjoying themselves,” she said. Mayor Gumede also assisted by handing over trophies to winning jockeys for a number of the races.

Also spotted at the event was eThekwini Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer wearing a bright yellow African inspired design with a coordinating hat as well as City Manager Sipho Nzuza and Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Councillor Sipho Kaunda. The Durban Fashion
Experience, courtesy of the Durban Fashion Fair, showcased the best of Classic Men’s Racewear, Classic Women’s Racewear, Best Fascinator or Race Day Hat and Most Striking Couple.

The winning designers, who aptly embodied the theme and wowed the judges with their designs on the day, walked away with a host of prizes. Invited aspiring designers, selected through the Durban Fashion Fair, also showcased their designs. The Young Designer Award was given to an elated Georgina Brink who will have the opportunity to experience SA Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2019 collection

later this year. She also won a number of other prizes. Also notable was the impressive dome-shaped marquee by Durban Tourism, which was a Durban July first. The expansive marquee was part of the ‘tent town’ aspect of the Durban July which hosted a number of VIP guests.

The marquee, which accommodated 650 invited guests, had a distinctive African theme and carried through the décor with guests treated to hair and fashions shows and musical entertainment. They could also indulge in hand massages as well as having their make-up professionally done which was on offer at the marquee.
