RESIDENTS living in and around uMkhomazi are the primary beneficiaries of the R17.4 million brand new state-of-the-art fi re station that officially opened its doors to the public on 6 February. The new fire station, a first of its kind in the area, comprises of a two storey administration building and a steel framed engine bay, with paving, fencing and retaining walls.
The uMkhomazi Fire Station, will bring much needed aid to areas such as uMgababa, Magabheni, Clanstal, Craigieburn, UMkhomazi, Widenham, Roseneath, Mahlongwa, Illfracombe, Danganya, uMnini as well as areas in the east of the former Vulamehlo Municipality (Ward 98). Regional Commander for the South, Sibusiso Mkhulisi said: “We currently have one rescue pump (fire engine), which at a time can be manned by a platoon consisting of one fi re officer and three fi re fighters. In total we have four platoons as the station operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Platoon B Station Commander Kubeshan Naidoo said the new station is equipped to deal with large scale fires from factories and render emergency medical assistance. Residents are encouraged to contact the City’s Fire and Emergency Services call centre on 031 361 0000.
