Task team members to assist the homeless elected
EThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer met with
volunteers who have agreed to work with the City to address
homelessness.
A MULTI-SECTORIAL task team that was established recently to address homelessness in the City met at the Durban City Hall on 15 October to elect a chairperson and to fill in other key positions in the newly formed body.

The Director of the Denis Hurley Centre, Raymond Perrier was elected as chairperson and the two deputies elected were Linda Morrison and Des Moodley. EThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer who called for the establishment of the task team thanked all the volunteers for their commitment in working with the city and all stakeholders in finding holistic solutions to the address the issue. Councillor Peer said: “We have a lot of work to do to address homelessness.

We want things to be done properly and in an orderly manner so that the City is clean.” Councillor Peer explained to the team that assisting the destitute and homeless is a mammoth task as they will have to deal with a range of challenges including mental health, substance abuse and the lack of proper documentation. “We need to ensure that there is a system in place that allows for the reunification and integration of the homeless back to their families.

We will also look into skills development and employment opportunities,” added the Deputy Mayor. Safer Cities Deputy Head, Nomusa Shembe said four sub-committees were established which will work on both short and long term programmes which aim to assist the homeless. The sub-committees are; shelter and infrastructure, funding and sponsorships, nongovernment organisations and the reunification committee. The task team consists of community representatives, business people, faith based organisations, government and City officials.
