South African Cemeteries and Crematoria Inaugural Pan African Conference 2017
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede will officiate the opening of the inaugural Pan African Conference on Monday, 28 August at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

The conference hosted by the South African Cemeteries Association (SACA) in partnership with eThekwini Municipality and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will be attended by more than 250 international, national and local delegates.

The conference will afford experts and relevant stakeholders an opportunity to discuss challenges faced in the provision of sustainable interment services nationally and the extent of challenges beyond national boundaries. The subject of scarcity of land and burial sites, environmental obligations and sensitivity to traditions, beliefs and customs of the people of Africa will be examined extensively.

It will provide an opportunity to present research, encourage discussion, share experiences, innovations and approaches in the provision of services for which government authorities are responsible. Papers and discussions will include urbanisation, population growth, rampant development, climate-change and the delay in adapting to these changes as a result of traditional practices within communities.

The need for this gathering not only arises from these challenges but the startling realisation that this service requires an initiative to collectively galvanise authorities throughout Africa to address this problem.
