Sonto Mthembu wins Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award
Student fashion designer Sonto Mthembu has been named as the winner of the Vodacom Durban July (VDJ) Young Designer Award presented by the Durban Fashion Fair at an event held on 25 August at the Greyville Racecourse.

Ten designers showcased their designs to a handful of invited guests. Their creations were inspired by the VDJ raceday theme 'Butterflies".

Mthembu's striking white outfit with unique shimmering arm draping’s was inspired by an unusual foray into lepidopterology as she became fascinated with a very specific butterfly which became the inspiration for her garment.

"On 28 January a very special butterfly was seen both here in Durban and Johannesburg," she explained. "For me, its appearance was striking, and it brought life even though we were about to be gripped by this pandemic."

Mthembu  was overcome with emotion when she was announced as the winner of the prestigious competition that brings with it R10 000 in cash, an array of prizes and a trip to South African Fashion Week next year.

Mthembu said it took her over a month to create the elaborate outfit with design hampered by the lockdown as she couldn’t access industrial sewing machines used at her design college. Deputy Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Councillor Nomthandazo Shabalala said: “We are proud as the Municipality to have founded the Durban Fashion Fair programme which has played an immense role in unearthing and grooming new talent. Clearly our investments are paying off as we have witnessed the progress of former beneficiaries who have gone on to successfully open fashion stores. We will continue providing development opportunities for aspiring designers.”

Councillor Shabalala congratulated all 50 student finalists of the VDJ Young Designer Award programme for their commitment and dedication.

Namisa Mavuma, from the Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion was named second runner up, with third place going to Mamello Putsoane from the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion.

The winner walks away with an all-expenses paid trip the South African Fashion Week 2021, R10 000 in cash from Schweppes and Gold Circle, a R5 000 Gateway Theatre of Shopping gift voucher, a Samsung Galaxy S9 and a R2 500 Kryolan gift voucher.

The first runner-up takes home R3000 in cash from Schweppes and Gold Circle, a R2000 Gateway Theatre of Shopping gift voucher and a R1800 Kyolan gift voucher. The second runner-up gets R 2000 in cash from Schweppes and Gold Circle, a R1000 Gateway Theatre of Shopping gift voucher and a R1200 Kryolan gift voucher.

Each of the ten finalists receives R2000 in cash from Schweppes and Gold Circle and 5GB of data from Vodacom. Most importantly, the top three students will be integrated into the Durban Fashion Fair mentorship programme in 2021 and showcase at the Durban Fashion Fair show in 2021.
