Team eThekwini scooped 11 gold medals, three silvers and a bronze to emerge clear winners at this year’s Kwanaloga Games in Richards Bay recently (2010). Highlights included victories in golf, cricket, women’s rugby and soccer. The men’s rugby team got silver after losing to uMzinyathi Municipality. Runners up uMkhanyakude and uThungulu municipalities won two golds.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kwanaloga Chairman, Mayor Obed Mlaba said the tournament had grown in stature over the years and was now used by talent spotters to identify future stars. MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Weziwe Thusi said the department was looking at upping its R1- million contribution towards the event. “We have all seen how these games unite people. By nature sport is for young people and we need to work with them to bring about transformation,” Thusi said. The games will be held in Durban next year.
