Mayor Gumede congratulates Semenya, Le Clos and Schoeman
The eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Her Worship, Councillor Zandile Gumede congratulates Caster Semenya for smashing a Commonwealth Games Record in the 1500m event and a Durban born Chad Le Clos for being the first male swimmer to win three consecutive Commonwealth gold medals in the same event at the Gold Coast, Australia on Monday and Tuesday.

Semenya wipe more than four seconds off the old mark when she crossed the line in 4:00.71 to break the national 1 500m Women record of 4:01.81, which had been set by Zola Budd in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in March 1984.

Mayor Gumede describes Semenya and Le Clos unmatched achievements at the Commonwealth Games as a clear demonstration of their resilience and strength of character.

“The two has also proved to us that the real contest is always between what you have done and what you are capable of doing. Semenya and Le Clos measured their capabilities against themselves and nobody else. As people of eThekwini we are proud of their achievements and we have no doubt their unmatched accomplishments will inspire our young people to play sports and to embrace its values,” said Gumede.

Gumede also wishes to congratulate another Durban born Henrie Schoeman who begged the first South African gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after winning the men’s triathlon final.

Issued by the Mayor’s Parlour, for more information contact the Mayoral Spokesman, Mthunzi Gumede on 071 412 7701.
