International Planning Experts at World Town Planning Day Webinar

International experts are all geared up to join and discuss topics which will analyse how planning implementation affects communities during a World Town Planning Day webinar to be held from 4 to 6 November.


Speakers’ discussions will be under the theme ‘The Paradox of Planning Implementation Across the Globe’ and the sub-themes Spatial Planning, Smart Cities, the 4th Industrial Revolution as well as Covid-19 and Urban Design.


Project Executive from the Development Planning Department Lekha Allopi said World Town Planning Day is an event that is aimed at advancing public and professional interest within the planning profession.


“It is dedicated to giving focused recognition to the ideals of community planning, which brings professional planners and communities together.

 This event has been celebrated as early as 1949 and it continues to present an opportunity to look at planning from a local and global perspective and celebrate the profession’s achievements as well as showcase planning evolution,” said Allopi.


She encouraged all those who have not registered for the webinar to do so.


The event will be hosted by several stakeholders namely eThekwini Municipality, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South African Council of Planners, South African Cities Network, South African Local Government Association, and the Municipal Institute of Learning. It will also serve as a pre-congress event for the 56th International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) Virtual World Planning Congress.


Some of the esteemed presenters include Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, member of the working group on improving spatial planning under the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Alexander Antonov, Research Fellow at the Institute of Public Policy and Administration of the University of Central Asia Dr Madina Junussova, Director of School of Architecture at Noida International University Rajendra Kumar, Head of the Department of Urban Design and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, Gdansk University of Technology Piotr Lorens, Secretary General of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) Frank Jean D’hondt  and Leader on Future-Proof Cities for the Manchester Urban Institute Joe Ravetz.


As part of the event, the World Town Planning Day Competition winners will be announced on 5 November.
