A United States of America delegation, led by internationally acclaimed actor and film director Danny Glover, has pledged to invest in the local film and television industry to showcase African stories as well as local talent.

The delegation, which held a workshop at the K-CAP Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre in KwaMashu on 2 August, will work with emerging local filmmakers to explore opportunities and potential investments in the industry. Business Development Programme Manager Nonkululeko Mthembu said the collaboration will contribute to the growth of the local film industry. “This industry is a contributor to the economy.

The workshop equipped emerging filmmakers in how to use local content to showcase it to the world,” she said. Dr Lwazi Manzi, Managing Director of Mercurial Pictures and one of the local film industry success stories of the Essence Festival hosted by the City in 2016 and 2017, said part of the programme is to assist local filmmakers promote commercial viable content. “An investment will be made by incubating and informing the country of its intellectual property. We need to find African stories to sell internationally, so through this collaboration a space will be created for emerging filmmakers to realise the potential of the continent when it comes to content.

We must understand that there is no need to go beyond Africa because this continent has all the resources to make and sell stories abroad,” she said. Glover, who portrayed the character of Nelson Mandela in the 1987 film titled Mandela said story telling is a critical industry which carries historical value. “We are revisiting our thinking so that we can portray our pictures better when making films. We must articulate ourselves more through story telling about Africa,” he said.
