EThekwini Applauded For a Sterling Conference: AFUS 2017
Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Councilor, Zandile Gumede

As the curtains descend on what has been a 3 day strategic planning session for creating safer cities for all, the second Africa Forum for Urban Safety (AFUS) Learning Exchange Conference was held at the Moses Mabhida stadium, the Chairperson of AFUS and Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Councilor, Zandile Gumede has committed to 3 key actions that needs to be implemented moving forward.

Gumede has committed to the implementation of eThekwini Safety Audit as the project meant to develop urban safety monitoring framework to support all African cities and local governments through AFUS.

“We committed to the development and delivery of relevant and appropriate urban safety curriculum content in support of local governments and strategic partners. It is also important that we establish a special purpose mechanism to allow AFUS to mobilize resources to support the implementation of the AFUS Strategic Agenda 2015-2025,” said Gumede.

She went on to add that it was vitally important that women play a meaningful and strategic role in driving this agenda. “It is for this reason that we further committed that the 2018 Learning Exchange will focus on women safety in African Cities and it should take place during the 16 Days of Activism against violence to women and children,”.

The Chairperson of AFUS Advisory Council, Dr Alioune Badiane applauded the eThekwini Municipality for the continuous commitment, involvement and participation towards creating safer cities for all.  “We happy that our Technical Advisory council has been expanded to include reference group from South Africa. This council will be in charge of the quality control and making sure that the work on AFUS is on track and will advise the Chair of AFUS accordingly.

We are now preparing for next Learning Exchange and the focus will be on the safety and security of women in Africa. We regard this decision as a huge milestone as the safety and security of women is a global challenge. The exchange will go deep into the challenge faced by women in ordinary situations and women is post conflict situation,” said Badiane.

In February next year, Mayor Gumede will represent Africa in the World Urban Forum, Kuala Lumpur, where she present the Durban declaration.
