EThekwini's proposed Renewable Energy Policy to transform the sector
The eThekwini Energy Policy will go out for public comment soon.
THE eThekwini Energy Policy, the first of its kind at a local government level in South Africa, has been developed to truly transform the energy sector and bring policy certainty to investors.

It aims to diversify the energy portfolio by reducing reliance on the coal based national energy provider, making use of local resources to generate power closer to consumption areas, reduce Municipal bulk operating expenditure and consumer electricity bills by deploying the least-cost technologies and reduce carbon emissions within the jurisdiction of eThekwini.

The policy will be out for public comment in the near future. It is expected that the policy will attract R43 billion in both foreign and local direct investment while creating 6 500 sustainable jobs as we move towards 2030. It is expected that local companies will drive this true energy revolution and promote a local manufacturing base in KwaZulu-Natal. Adopting this energy policy will further bring stability in key strategic sectors of the economy and minimise the impact of load-shedding.

The energy sector will play a central role in the City’s Economic Recovery Plan with the City also investing in its own power generation infrastructure and establishing the Municipal Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme where investors in the energy sector will be allowed to sell affordable electricity to eThekwini Municipality.

The recommended technologies include wind energy, solar PV, hydropower, waste to energy, landfill gas, hydrogen economy, grid scale energy storage, ocean energy and LNG to power.
