EThekwini gears up for Global Entrepreneurship Week
To ensure that small businesses are part of the mainstream economy, eThekwini Municipality will host a series of business development workshops between 16 to 22 November in various parts of the City.

This forms part of the commemoration of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) which is celebrated worldwide in November with the aim of assisting aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs with skills and knowledge to grow their businesses.

The highlight of the of the weeklong programme will be a two-session business engagement to be hosted on 19 November at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. The morning business engagement will discuss invaluable lessons and insights on coping with Covid-19 and its aftermath and will deliberate on what strategies businesses can adopt going forward while the midday business engagement will tackle Ecommerce emerging trends and the future of Ecommerce post Covid-19.

To assist in unpacking the impact of Covid-19 and its aftermath on businesses during the morning session on 19 November will be prominent business people sitting on the panel including Max Mqadi, founder and owner of Max’s Lifestyle, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Icebolethu Group Nomfundo Mcoyi, Executive Chairman of Edison Power Group Vivian Ready, President of Toyota South Africa Nigel Ward and Chief Executive of KZN Oils and RR Group Executive Chairman Rajen Reddy.

The second panel which will unpack Ecommerce and its future will include Trend Analyst and Founder of Flux Trends Dion Chang, Co-Founder and Chief Growth Officer at Dropstore Pty Ltd Adewale Adejumo, Eleni Kwinana who is the Executive Head at Vodacom KZN and Laduma Ngxokolo, founder of MaXhosa Africa.

On 17 November, furniture making skills development training will be held at Umkhumbane Entrepreneurial Support Centre while a ward 94 business empowerment session will take place at the Kwa Makhutha Community Hall. A product development (pottery) workshop to be hosted at SEDA and a Cooperative Development and Access to Finance Programme workplace will be hosted in the north, south and west regions.

Training to be facilitated on 18 November include a ward 12 business empowerment workshop at the KwaNdengezi Community Hall, an entrepreneurship seminar at the Clermont Auditorium and a business linkages session to be held at Umkhumbane Entrepreneurial Support Centre Innovation Co-Lab.

Also on 19 November, a ward 102 business empowerment workshop will be hosted at the Cornubia Retail Centre and a Business Licensing Compliance Workshop will be held in Tongaat/Hambanathi along with product development (pottery) and contractor development.

On 20 November, a tax compliance workshop for rural and township small, medium and micro enterprises will be held in Lamontville with the aim of boosting sales of products of local designers. There will also be a Durban Fashion Fair Emporium activation hosted at uMlazi Mega City.

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said: “Our sincere commitment in developing local entrepreneurs by presenting investment opportunities, market access and providing much needed knowledge will be evident during the GEW weeklong programme. We have partnered with reputable private companies who will be on site sharing their expertise which could open many doors for people.”
