SUPPORT from KwaMashu business owners and the community is essential in assisting the police to fight crime, Chairperson of the KwaMashu Businesses Against Crime Project Mfanafuthi Gumede said at a ceremony held in honour of volunteers on 17 November.

KwaMashu businesses in partnership with eThekwini Municipality honoured about 20 volunteers of the KwaMashu Businesses Against Crime Project for their sterling work in making the project a success. Gumede said the initiative started about a year ago owing to the scourge of crime in the shopping precinct. Nearby business owners were approached for support and funding, and with their support, this project started.

“We have managed to decrease crime in the area by working with the South African Police Service and Metro Police,” he said. Safer Cities Manager Pumla Jingxi applauded the initiative, which is supported by a number of local businesses in KwaMashu, including the Big Box Company, KFC, Cambridge Foods, Vibe FM and Top Bets. Jonas Barausse of the Big Box Company said their mandate is to ensure that people can move freely without falling victim to criminals.
