City to host informal traders indaba

To unlock job opportunities and promote economic growth within the informal economy, eThekwini Municipality will host an Informal Traders Indaba on 22 September.

The Informal Traders Indaba will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre while simultaneously being held at 13 venues in different regions. Traders are encouraged to attend at venues close to them and to comply to all Covid-19 safety regulations.

The Indaba is a platform where eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda will outline strategies to transform the City’s informal economy sector into an efficient and competitive economy. Mayor Kaunda will also unpack plans to upgrade infrastructure for informal traders in eThekwini following the civil unrest that crippled the sector. Sector stakeholders will also have an opportunity to voice their opinions on how the City can assist them take the sector forward.

The informal traders’ sector is very important to the City’s economy as it contributes over R8 billion which translates to more than nine percent of the Gross Domestic Product. This sector is also a major provider of employment, goods, and services for lower income groups.

Traders   are   encouraged   to   attend   at venues   close   to   them   and to   comply   with all   Covid-19   safety regulations.

The venues are:

  • OThongathi Community Hall (Basement)
  • Ottawa Community Hall
  • Verulam Sizakala (Market Area)
  • ITRUMP Area Based Management Hall in Warwick Avenue
  • City Health Auditorium
  • Clermont Hall
  • Council Chamber, Pinetown Civic Centre
  • Isiphingo Beach Community Hall
  • UMlazi AA Community Hall
  • UShaka Marine World- Upper Deck
  • Toti Civic Centre (Supper Room)
  • Bester Hall
  • KwaMashu Community Hall, L Section
The event will also be streamed live on eThekwini Municipality’s social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube @eThekwiniM.
